Aug. 21, 1974

Lexington City Council unanimously rejected a petition demanding that city manager John Doane be fired for mismanagement of city affairs. - Mel Greenberg returned to Lexington and was met by a small group of reporters, the county jail caretaker, a Lexington woman and her dog. -A county trash collector could not believe his eyes when a bag of trash he had hurled into the back of his truck came open revealing $3,000 in cash inside. The money had been stolen from White’s Truck Stop.

Skip Kirk of Hot Springs, Ark., carried a cross through downtown Lexington. He was on his way to Boston and made several stops along the way to share the gospel. -A former Valley Cinemas employee pleaded guilty after being charged with stealing a film copy of “The Passion of the Christ.” - The new “rat” class at Virginia Military Institute arrived. A total of 421 first-year cadets matriculated at the start of the week.
