The Effinger Ruritan Club would like to thank all those who were a part of its 34th Palmer Ice Cream Supper held Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Palmer Community Center. The evening drew approximately 1,000 patrons of all ages and 70 volunteers who enjoyed music, good food, delicious homemade ice cream and the opportunity to gather with friends and enjoy the fellowship. Those in attendance were also able to visit the Rockbridge Regional Library’s bookmobile, sign up for library cards and obtain books.
Special thanks are extended to the event’s leadership team and to all the Effinger Ruritan Club members and their families who worked diligently to make the event so successful. Appreciation is also extended to the members of the Palmer Community Center, the Boy Scouts, the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department, and to the many volunteers for their help in making the event run so smoothly. Funds raised from the sale of food, ice cream and the 50/50 drawing will be used to support the Palmer Community Center and the Effinger Ruritan Club.
The Collierstown Presbyterian Women concluded their annual School Bag Campaign on Sunday, Aug. 11. A goal of preparing 260 canvas tote bags of school supplies to be distributed to needy students was surpassed, resulting in 275 school bags being made. Special thanks to Louise Tardy who made all the attractive and sturdy canvas bags that were filled. Many thanks to everyone who gave school supplies or monetary gifts that helped make this project a church and community-wide effort!
The Collierstown United Methodist Church will hold a family fellowship dinner on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m. Fried chicken and beverages will be provided. Those attending are asked to bring covered dishes of salads, v eggies a nd d esserts. T his event is to celebrate the work done by the church family during the recent restoration projects in the kitchen and church building.
Leadership of the 9 a.m. chapel service for Lake Robertson campers during the month of August is being provided by Roger Lees of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church. Community residents are invited to join the campers attending the outdoor service at 9 a.m. each Sunday.
On Sunday, Aug. 25, members and friends of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church will gather on the church grounds at 10:30 a.m. for the church’s annual summer outdoor worship service followed by a covered-dish picnic lunch on the church grounds. The worship service will be led by Burr Datz and Jeremiah Holland will provide special music. Everyone is invited to worship and stay for an afternoon of good food and fellowship.
The Effinger Volunteer Fire Department’s last barbecue chicken sale of the summer will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, beginning at noon. On that day barbecue chicken can be purchased as half chicken only or as a dinner which includes two sides, applesauce, roll and iced tea. The side choices will be green beans, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni salad and slaw. Chicken will be available until all is sold. Food items may be purchased as carryout. Seating for indoor on site dining will also be available.
Union View Advent Christian Church will celebrate homecoming at the church on Sunday, Sept. 22. The homecoming worship serve will begin at 11 a.m. followed by a covered-dish luncheon. The day will conclude with a program of gospel singing and music led by the Ladies of Mercy, a local gospel group. Members and friends of the Union View Advent Christian Church are asked to save this date.
