Sept. 4, 1974

Officials estimated that 10,000-12,000 people attended the Labor Day festivities at Glen Maury Park during which Yolanda Coffey won the Miss Glen Maury pageant. -A 6-year-old boy was struck by a motorist on his way home from school in Lexington. The boy’s leg was broken in the accident; the car received damage in the form of an imprint from the boy’s lunch box. - The Rev. Michael Dwinell announced his resignation as chaplain and assistant to the rector at R.E. Lee Memorial Episcopal Church.

“Big Tom” Buchanan, a native of Virginia and a contestant on “Survivor,” was the honorary grand marshal of the Buena Vista Labor Day parade. - Bontex celebrated its 50th anniversary in Buena Vista. Starting hourly wage at the plant was $10 and the average hourly wage was $14.50. - Just in time for the Labor Day holiday, the Regional Tourism Board debuted its new tourism DVD.
