The Parry McCluer High School volleyball team improved to 2-0 on the new season with a 3-1 road victory over Roanoke Catholic on Thursday.
Two nights after beating Rockbridge County in four sets at home, the Fighting Blues produced a similar scoreline with a 30-28, 25-14, 21-25, 25-19 win over the Celtics (0-3).
Kadence Zollman paced the PM offense with 14 kills, and she also tallied three blocks. Keely Mahaffey notched 20 assists, five kills, four blocks and seven digs for the Blues, while Allie Cullen totaled 20 digs, seven kills and two service aces.
“Overall, I was really happy with the fight and grit our girls demonstrated,” PM head coach Jessie Moala said. “We had a bit of trouble with communication during the third set, but I was pleased that they were able to turn it around for the fourth set.”
The Blues got contributions from up and down their lineup. Emory Slagle recorded nine kills and two aces, and Peira Conner finished with five kills, four blocks and five aces. Natalie Mohler chipped in 14 assists and 13 digs, and Logan Vest posted 18 digs and four aces.
That complete team effort was key as PM avoided a letdown following a dramatic win over the Wildcats just 48 hours earlier.
“The thing I love about this current group of girls is that they don’t give up,” Moala said. “Overall, I am very excited to see where this season takes us.”
The Blues were slated to play host to Nelson County last night. PM will visit Amherst County on Thursday, followed by a rematch with Rockbridge County in Lexington on Monday and a home rematch against Roanoke Catholic on Tuesday. Junior varsity action starts at 5:30 on all three evenings.
