W&L Events Mark Terrorist Attacks
Washington and Lee University will commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a community flag placing and memorial service.
Two Washington and Lee alumni lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks: Rob Schlegel ’85, who died in the Pentagon, and James Gadiel ’00, who died in the World Trade Center.
Area residents are invited to join W&L students for a community flag placing on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Stemmons Plaza, behind the Colonnade. Students and community members will place 2,977 American flags, one for each victim of the attacks. They will also place international flags for every country that lost a citizen in the attacks. Participants may come and go throughout the event.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 5:30 p.m., student organizations will host an annual memorial service, beginning with an interfaith prayer on Stemmons Plaza, followed by a moment of silence. Speakers will include the presidents of College Democrats and College Republicans, and Paul Youngman, the associate provost for academic development and operations. The memorial service will also feature performances by student musicians.
The events are sponsored by College Democrats, College Republicans, and The Generals Redoubt.
