State Sen. H.D. “Buzz” Dawbarn announced that he was resigning his General Assembly seat effective Sept. 16. Dawbarn was the senator from the 24th Senatorial District, which included Lexington, Rockbridge County, Buena Vista, Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County and Highland County. - Varney Badgett presented a petition to Lexington City Council signed by 144 families representing 232 pupils in the city elementary schools seeking bus service in outlying sections of the city. -An ordinance restricting the carrying of unconcealed weapons in public enacted in 1958 by Lexington Town Council was ruled invalid by Virginia Attorney General Andrew Miller.

The area escaped major damage from Hurricane Frances and then braced for the impact of Hurricane Ivan. - South River Supervisor Carroll Comstock stepped down from Rockbridge County’s growth planning committee after it became apparent that Comstock’s views on controlling growth were out of sync with those of the majority of supervisors. - Lexington attorney Larry Mann, representing the county on the ongoing courthouse issue, said that it was very likely that an extension on the construction timetable would be sought.
