Harris/Walz Stronger On Child Tax Credit

Sept. 6, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: Harris/Walz have a much stronger record than Trump/ Vance on the child tax credit.

In 2021, Biden/Harris expanded the credit to $3,000 per child. That expansion expired, but Harris/Walz promise to restore it. As governor, Walz also established a child tax credit. Harris/Walz have demonstrated their commitment to this policy through their actions, not just their words.

Senator Vance says he supports expanding the credit, but he failed to show for a Senate vote that would have done just that. He criticizes mothers who work, but he doesn’t vote for policies that would ease financial burden on families.

It’s true that Trump increased the credit to $2,000 per child, but low-income families weren’t eligible for the whole thing. This is consistent with Trump’s policies overall: handouts for the wealthiest and little for everyone else.

Biden/Harris made their $3,000 credit available to all families, regardless of income, and Harris/Walz would do the same. By eliminating eligibility requirements, child poverty fell by half, but unfortunately this has not continued since the expansion expired.

If we want thriving communities, families need more support. Trump/Vance talk about it, but Harris/Walz will ensure they get it. TAYLOR WALLE Lexington
