The annual Labor Day 5-kilometer running race and 600-meter kids’ fun run welcomed 82 participants on Monday of last week in Buena Vista, raising funds for the Parry McCluer High School cross country teams.
There were 52 participants in the 5K and 30 in the fun run. Directing the races was Katy Patterson Scott, a 2015 PM graduate who ran cross country and track and played basketball for the Fighting Blues. Also helping out were PM head cross country coach Chris Poluikis and his current cross country runners. Both races were flat and started and ended at Camden Field, with the 5K going into downtown Buena Vista, prior to the Labor Day morning parade.
Jonathan Coleman, a 2014 PM graduate, won the 5K in 16 minutes, 44.6 seconds. MacKenzye Leroy placed second in 17:56.49, and Judah Brownstein, a 2001 Rockbridge County High School graduate, finished third in 19:36.29.
The female winner for the second year in a row was Laurel Sheffield, a 2014 RC graduate, placing fourth overall in 20:00.33. Finishing second among females and placing eighth overall was Brianna Rogstad in 24:09.48. Placing third among females and 11th overall was 2014 PM graduate Ali Wheeler, finishing in 25:21.
Male age group winners were Andrew Cooper (17 and under, 12th overall in 25:49.46), Conrad Patterson (18-29, ninth in 24:17.81), Adam Williams (30-39, fifth in 20:42.29), Jared Lee (40-49, sixth in 20:42.29) and Les Gearhart (50 and over, seventh in 23:07.98).
Female age group winners were Dykell Jones (18-29, 14th in 25:58.16), Kirsten Barney (30-39, 23rd in 29:34.55), Melissa Frost (40-49, 15th in 26:13.08) and Teresa Seelke (50 and over, 32nd in 32:04.3).
