Chorus To ‘Reclaim’ Spring Concert

The Rockbridge Chorus, directed by William McCorkle, will “reclaim” its spring concert, entitled “French and English Treasures,” on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Lexington Presbyterian Church.

The program, which could not take place on April 21 due to a downtown power outage, will include two popular works, Maurice Duruflé’s “Requiem” and Benjamin Britten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb.” The program will include also short anthems by William Walton, John Rutter, César Franck, and André Caplet.

“We have been fortunate to maintain this program and to assemble almost the same ensemble from our spring endeavor,” said McCorkle. “This is magnificent choral repertoire; our excitement to share it has only intensified over the summer months. And it’s a great joy that our gifted organist and soloists, some of whom no longer reside in our area, are able to join us this time around. What a wonderful program to offer so early in the concert season!”

Organist for the concert will be Peggy Haas Howell of Lynchburg, well-known as a recitalist in the United States and Europe, and an experienced conductor and teacher. An ensemble of vocal soloists is known to local audiences from past appearances here: soprano Christine Fairfield, mezzo-sopranos Christine Schadeberg and Emma Vasquez, tenors Christopher Vasquez and Scott Williamson, and baritone Michael McLaughlin.

All tickets from the April 21 original performance date will be honored for the Sept. 15 concert. For anyone needing tickets, advance tickets for the performance can be purchased online from the Rockbridge Choral Society website, rcs.org, at $12.50 per person and $35 for immediate family. Tickets will also be available at the door at $15 per person and $40 for immediate family.

The need to reschedule/reclaim a performance is a first for the Rockbridge Chorus, which for almost 50 years has been a fixture of the cultural life of the Rockbridge area, presenting annual holiday concerts along with performances of major works, offering music of many composers, national styles, and time periods. The Rockbridge Chorus receives support through donations made to The Rockbridge Choral Society by area individuals, businesses and organizations.
