Car Goes Airborne, Strikes Building

Car Goes Airborne, Strikes Building

A single-vehicle accident on East Nelson Street last Tuesday resulted in no serious injuries and minor damage to the Frank’s Pizza building.

Officers with the Lexington Police Department responded to the accident just after 5:30 on Sept. 3, finding a silver 2010 Toyota Yaris “sitting on top of the brick wall on the west side of Frank’s, pointed downwards, with the front of the vehicle resting against the corner of the building,” according to the incident report.

A female driver was in the car. She was identified as Shirley Frazier, 82, and told officers she was uninjured, though she did appear to be “slightly disoriented.” Frazier was removed from the vehicle and brought up to the Cookout parking lot, where she was checked out by EMS who had arrived on scene.

According to the report, Frazier said that she had was turning east onto Nelson Street from New Market Street (Evergreen Place) and that she “had no idea what happened, that it felt like ‘the car was driving itself.’” The report also indicated that Frazier “kept blaming the car for being a Toyota” and said that “it happened in two other Toyota vehicles.” The report said that Frazier “did not appear to be under the influence of any intoxicants or medications.”

The police also talked to witnesses at the scene, who reported that Frazier turned onto Nelson Street and was traveling at a high rate of speed when she “hit the curb of the sidewalk, causing the vehicle to go airborne through a set of hedges and down the hill through the top of a concrete wall before striking the corner of Frank’s.”

Frazier was released on a summons for reckless driving (failure to maintain control of a vehicle).
