RC Fourth At Lakeview McCoy Places Second Individually For Wildcats
Led by senior Andrew Mc-Coy’s runner-up performance, the Rockbridge County High School golf team placed fourth of eight teams in a Valley District match on Monday of last week at Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg.
After a break in competition of more than two weeks, the Wildcats shot a 335, led by Mc-Coy’s 75 on the challenging 18hole, par-72 course on a windy but beautiful day. RC head coach David Miller said McCoy “was awesome again today.”
McCoy trailed only Jacob Burkholder, who won with a 71 to lead Spotswood to victory with a 308. Turner Ashby placed second with a 326, and East Rockingham (332) finished third. Rounding out the standings were RC, William Monroe (340), Broadway (356), Rocktown (360) and Harrisonburg (398).
RC’s second scorer was freshman Davis Welsh, firing a career-best 86. “He has really been working hard and it is paying off,” said Miller.
Sophomore Finbar Looney and junior Harrison Tanner completed the Wildcats’ scoring, both shooting 87. Also competing for RC were freshman Joe Vargas, posting an 89, and junior Dean Fafatas, carding a 90.
Miller was especially pleased by his freshmen. “So proud of these young players,” he said. “Great attitudes and hard work pay off.”
The Wildcats, who have a winning record in their last five district matches, were scheduled to play their final district match on Monday at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg. The top two teams in the district and the top five individuals outside of those teams will advance to the Region 3C tournament, which will be at Heritage Oaks on Tuesday, Oct. 1, starting at 10 a.m.
