Jazz guitarist Royce Campbell takes center stage at the next SonoKlect concert on Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. in the Wilson Concert Hall in Washington and Lee University’s Lenfest Center. The Vosbein Magee Big Band will be there to accompany Campbell in a series of his original compositions.
No tickets are required. A reception will follow the performance. Royce Campbell is considered a titan among jazz guitarists and composers. He is revered by icons like Quincy Jones, who said that “every note Royce Campbell plays is perfect,” and Henry Mancini, who offered Campbell a spot in his touring ensemble for two decades.
Having shared stages and studios with legends like Marvin Gaye, Mel Tormé, James Moody, Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughn, Jack McDuff, Ray Brown, Dave Brubeck, Joe Williams, Cleo Laine, Gerry Mulligan, Rosemary Clooney, and Mose Allison, Campbell’s musical journey is rich with collaboration and innovation, said a spokesman.
The concert in Lexington will showcase his original compositions, arranged for big band by Carroll DeCamp, Campbell’s own uncle.
The Vosbein Magee Big Band returns to the SonoKlect stage to support the premiere performances of these treasures. Their tight ensembles and suburb soloists have garnered them praise since their start 2015.
