Sept. 23, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: My dad, who served our country during World War II, cherished our elections and the peaceful transfer of power. No matter who was being sworn in as president, my dad had the TV on and insisted that we watch together. He wanted his children to see what made our nation a great nation, regardless of which political party won the election.
If my father were still living, I know he would be joining many other fellow Republicans to vote for Kamala Harris. Her opponent, in my dad’s eyes would have had many flaws, but his refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election, his efforts to overturn those results, the violence he encouraged on January 6, plus his refusal to be present for the swearing in of the next president on January 20, 2021, would have been more than enough to disgrace and disqualify this candidate from ever deserving my dad’s vote to be commander-inchief.
I admire and am grateful for every Republican who will choose their country’s deepest values over their party affiliation in this election. I know, if my dad were still living, he proudly would be joining you. DEB KLEIN Rockbridge County
