Sept. 22, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: Some folks seem to think of the United States of America as a republic envisioned by the Founding Fathers in 1789 when the Constitution was signed. They did their best then.
In the 235 years since, it has become a democratic republic with 27 amendments, including a bill of rights, universal male and female voting rights, civil and property rights. All five are under attack by a Republican oligarchy which desires to abolish the constitution and establish a white male fascist dictatorship (their words) outside any law but the leader’s. Those of us who have sworn an oath to protect and defend the current Constitution will do so.
