Fix Focusing On Schools, Economy

Since retiring last year from Davita Dialysis, where she worked for 25 years, Jody Fix has been eager to get involved in the affairs of Buena Vista city government.

She was one of a halfdozen candidates to put herself forward for a vacancy on City Council earlier this year. She wasn’t selected, but she then sought appointment to a Council board or committee. She was appointed initially to the Board of Zoning Appeals, then stepped down from that post to accept an appointment to the city’s Economic Development Authority.

Now, Fix is a candidate to fill the remaining one year of a term on City Council. If she’s elected in November, economic development and the schools are among the priorities she wishes to emphasize.

She said she is focusing on “the growth of BV and making opportunities for continued growth. We have several new shops and would love to see even more.”

She said she sees the schools as “one of our city’s biggest and brightest jewels. Our students are the future leaders of our city. I would like to see Council attendance and interest in student events [grow]. I would especially like to have a ‘government day,’ where students shadow some city employees at City Hall.”

As a member of City Council, “I [would] want to make the citizens proud and eager to aid and assist in the improvement of our city. Our new Town Square is a true example of this.

“I would also love to see citizen awareness and activity in regards to the City Council and the matters they are involved with as well as attending meetings. It would be great to see the meetings full of citizens.”

She said she would encourage making repairs to the city’s streets so as to “avoid accidents and injuries.” She wants to address the issue of “abandoned or disrepair in homes.” The city, she said, needs to make homeowners “accountable … care [must be] taken [of] these properties.”

A long-time resident of Buena Vista, Fix and her late husband Fred moved here in 1988. They raised two daughters who are now grown and live outside of the area with children of their own. Fix is a native of Phoenixville, Pa. and a graduate of Phoenixville High School.

Both of her daughters graduated from Parry McCluer High School. Earlier in her career, Fix worked as an aide in a special education classroom in the city schools for eight years. She has been the scorekeeper for the PMHS volleyball team for more than 25 years. “During this time I have seen students grow in confidence as well as their parents be able to say ‘that is my girl,’ ” she remarked.

She continued: “I have always been a fan of not only our city, schools and students, but all of our amazing citizens who act as the glue that keeps us going.”

As a resident of Buena Vista this past 36 years, she said, “I have always valued the kindness and compassion our citizens show for each other.”
