Blues Shut Out Generals, 55-0

Blues Shut Out Generals, 55-0

Barger, Brockenbrough Combine For Five Touchdowns

The Parry McCluer High School football team stormed to a 55-0 home win over Stonewall Jackson on Friday night at Bobby Williams Field in Buena Vista.

It was the second consecutive win and the largest margin of victory for the Fighting Blues (3-1) so far this season.

The Blues wasted no time asserting their control, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter and taking a 48-0 lead by halftime. The Generals (1-3) could not generate any momentum against the Blue’s defense, which kept them off the scoreboard throughout the game.

PM’s Jacob Shafer set the tone early, capping an 11-play drive with a touchdown on an 11-yard run, followed by a successful extrapoint kick by Sean O’Connor. O’Connor, instrumental throughout the game, made 7-of-8 extra-point attempts. The Blues went up 14-0 after Jackson Brockenbrough had a 1-yard TD run, and Jase Barger scored on a 15-yard run to extend PM’s lead to 21-0.

Barger led the offensive charge for the Blues, scoring three TDs. He rushed for 46 yards and a TD on four carries and caught three passes for 34 yards and two TDs.

In the second quarter, Barger caught a 7-yard TD pass from Nathan Glass to extend PM’s lead to 28-0. A 39-yard TD run by Brockenbourgh then made it 35-0.

Glass, who completed 7-of-16 passes for 95 yards and rushed for 45 yards on three carries, also contributed defensively with a 32yard interception return for a TD, giving PM a 42-0 lead. PM’s final TD before halftime came on a 20-yard pass from Glass to Barger.

The Generals struggled to find any rhythm, unable to score against a PM defense that held them to just five first downs and 23 rushing yards.

The second half was more quiet, with PM adding only one more TD – a 1-yard run by Kyle Smals in the fourth quarter, again followed by an O’Connor kick.

The Blues racked up 355 total yards of offense – 260 rushing and 95 passing. Brockenbrough led all players with 125 rushing yards and two TDs on 13 carries. Glass rushed for 45 yards alongside him, and Shafer added 15 yards on two carries.

In the passing game, while Barger was Glass’s top target, Shafer caught two balls for 41 yards.

Defensively, the Blues stifled the Generals, with Shafer recording seven solo tackles and six assists and Parker Snider leading the team with 10 tackle assists and a key tackle for loss. Barger also stepped up defensively with four solo tackles and six tackle assists. The Generals struggled to move the ball, managing just 61 passing yards and turning the ball over twice, on a fumble and on an interception.

Proud of his team, PM head coach Jeremiah Brockenbrough said, “We played all aspects of the football game. Offensively, we were making out pretty well. Defensively, we didn’t give up but 84 yards. We played as a team. That’s been our whole game plan. If we individualize ourselves, that’s a problem.”

The Blues have a bye this week. Coach Brockenbrough said they’ll use their extra practice time to prepare for their home game against Fort Chiswell (0-4) on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. “This week is mainly fixing the small things, like technique,” he said. “Our lines just got to play better up front at times, and we got to make sure on defense that we’re not allowing people through.”

Fort Chiswell will attempt to turn the tide on its season at Eastern Montgomery this Friday.

The Blues’ Oct. 4 halftime promises to be a special occasion, as PM will honor its 11th Athletic Hall of Fame class, before the members are inducted at a banquet at the PM gym on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 5:15 p.m.
