A country general store that would include a restaurant and a small brewery are planned for the Kerrs Creek community by Steven D. and Christina M. Hart.
The plans are the culmination of the Kerrs Creek farmers market that has been in operation the past four years. A special exception permit for the project was approved Monday by the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors.
Steven Hart explained to the supervisors, as he had earlier to the Planning Commission, that the general store will be a more permanent venue for the products now sold by local farmers at the weekly farmers markets at Kerrs Creek.
According to a narrative included with the agenda materials for the special exception permit application, the Kerrs Creek Country Market “will carry a variety of items including pantry food goods, locally-grown meat, organic bulk food and fresh, seasonable vegetables.”
The restaurant “will be limited to one meal per day, three days per week, for the foreseeable future. Each meal will have one menu offering … The restaurant will have four tables that seat 10 people each so customers can sit with their new friends each time they eat. … the restaurant will source as many ingredients as possible from local farms.”
As an engineer, Hart told the supervisors he is designing the building project himself. He plans to start construction this fall and have the KCCM open for business in the spring. The special exception permit includes a provision that the construction project be completed within three years. The permit includes a stipulation that gasoline won’t be sold at the store.
The site for the general store is a tract of land on the northwest side of the intersection of West Midland Trail (U.S. 60) and Fredericksburg Road that is part of the 84.775-acre farm owned by the Harts.
