Plans were rapidly being made to put a Lexington school bus in operation. A used bus was purchased from Salem Quality Equipment Co. and it would need to be repainted and repaired to meet state safety regulations before it could hit the road. -A literature textbook used in Buena Vista schools was the subject of heated debate. Some parents found the profanity in some selections of the textbook objectionable. -To help ensure that customers received good telephone service and privacy, telephone operators would no longer be allowed to interrupt phone conversations by verifying a busy signal.

A motion filed by the city and county to extend the Dec. 15 deadline for submitting the final construction documents for the new courthouse was opposed by the state. - The Rockbridge County School Board adopted a new policy requiring vending machines in all of the schools, including those in faculty lounges, to dispense healthy snacks only. - Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise were in the Rockbridge area scouting locations for the movie “War of the Worlds,” which was already in production.
