The News-Gazette is one of two locally owned Virginia newspapers featured in a new docuseries airing on public television this month.
The second season of Virginia Public Media’s “Life In The Heart Land” explores how people in rural Virginia and beyond are creating unique solutions to their toughest challenges. With an overarching theme of generational change, this season takes a hard look into the rural problems and potential solutions regarding the topics of community journalism, aging, trees, recovery, migrant workers and veterans.
Deep Structure Productions, a video production service and independent film studio based in Staunton, collaborated with VPM to produce the series. The News-Gazette and The Recorder in Monterey are both featured in the segment on community journalism. A team from Deep Structure spent several days filming and interviewing staff at The News-Gazette in the spring of 2023.
There will be a free “Life in the Heart Land” community program and reception on Oct. 17, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro.
