Sept. 29, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: When someone we care about engages in destructive behavior, we show love and support by sharing our concern for them and encourage a healthier mindset. Now is such a time.
Too many don’t want to talk about politics because it causes stress. But if we don’t talk about the issues that impact our lives with those we care most about, we are complicit in enabling a mindset that may be molded by lies, deceit and cruelty. It needn’t be confrontational or judgmental, but substantive and require serious attention to the truth.
We need to hold one another accountable for our statements and beliefs. Allowing willful ignorance to permeate without being countered with facts and reality is a problem our society is plagued with. Not everyone will be receptive to thinking outside their box, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to explain that the economy is more than the price of eggs and gas. And that the freedom we enjoy is due to the democratic principles of our constitution that must be upheld by a system of checks and balances. And that preserving rights, whether we choose to exercise them or not, is the hallmark of our great country. LAUREN SUMMERS Vesuvius
