Sept. 27, 2024 Editor, The New-Gazette: When we last gathered down at the old mail box, I said that I would never tell you how to vote. The main reason was that your shoes don’t fit mine. Still you are worried. You are worried about waking up on a cold November morning knowing that this is the end, that the sky has fallen, that our nation is doomed, that your candidate for president lost.
Don’t. Little Jimmy has the election covered. Who’s Little Jimmy? If you head up I-81 there is a big school named after our smallest president. That’s because at 5’4” and weighing in at not much over 100 pounds, Little Jimmy, or James Madison if you prefer, is the Father of the U.S. Constitution, a system of checks and balances that allows us to sleep at nights.
But what if our Constitution is shot down? Madison did not make it bullet proof. Instead he gave us a warning: “There are more instances of the abridgment of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.”
Well said, Little Jimmy. They don’t come much bigger than you. You have my vote. DAVID REYNOLDS Rockbridge County
