MOAA Golf Tourney Draws 56

The George C. Marshall Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America held its annual Veteran Support Golf Tournament, held Sept. 13 at the Lexington Golf & Country Club, was judged a success, providing an outstanding day of golf while raising resources for veterans and their families.

The tournament was played using the Captain’s Choice format, with gross and net prizes for both male and female flights. Prizes were also awarded for closest to the pin and longest drive. A long-distance putting contest further challenged golfers this year. Two women’s and twelve men’s teams comprising a total of 56 golfers, competed during the tournament.

The team of Ellen McCoy, Linda Maini, Christie Harris and Suzanne Williams placed first for the women’s flight with a low gross score of 71; the team of Tammy Shomo, Jane Mortenson, Carol Blair and Judy Werner took the prize for low net score with a 60. The men’s flight (net) was won by the team of Buddy Bryan, Bill Bryan, Jim Gearhart and Glenn Furr with a score of 51; men’s low score (gross) was won by the foursome of James Owens, Gary Tyree, Mark Sayre and David Hinty with a 56.

Christie Harris took top honors for women in both longest drive and closest to the pin. Matt Schwarzmann took top honors among the men for closest to the pin and the longest drive was posted by Matt Somerville. In the putting challenge, Ellen McCoy beat all players with a 60- foot putt ending only 1.5 inches from the hole.

All proceeds from the tournament will be used to support special service projects, and to provide assistance and scholarships for veterans and their families.
