Residents Asked To Help ‘Paint The Town Purple’

Throughout the month of October, Project Horizon is asking for residents’ help in “painting the town purple.” Purple is a symbol for peace, courage, survival, honor, and dedication to ending violence, said a spokeswoman.

Project Horizon is a recognized leader in efforts locally and statewide to address the pervasive problem of domestic and sexual violence. It provides confidential services to survivors of intimate partner violence as well as prevention, education, and outreach programs.

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women in the U.S. It is more common than automobile accidents, muggings, and cancer deaths combined. One in four women and one in seven men will experience violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

Here are some ways area residents can help Project Horizon paint the town purple: wear a purple outfit, paint your nails purple, place a purple flag, ribbon, or flowers like Asters outside. As a business, create a window display or share Project Horizon’s domestic violence awareness poster.

Anyone wanting a poster or other supplies can call Project Horizon at (540) 463-7861 or email Lisa Packer at lpacker@rockbridge. net.

Participants are invited to share a photo with Project Horizon of friends or co-workers wearing purple or of their business displays. Use #PaintLexPurple2024 for sharing photos.

“We would love to highlight all the efforts being made in Rockbridge County to eradicate violence,” said the spokeswoman.

“By spreading awareness we help victims know that they are not alone and that survivors can speak up, receive healing that they need, and advocate for change,” she said.

Project Horizon’s crisis hotline is open 24 hours a day at (540) 463-2594.
