Tai Chi Coming To Goshen

Valley Program for Aging Services will host a popular series of introductory Tai Chi classes in Goshen this fall.

Adults 60 years and older can participate in the series, which will be held on Mondays Oct. 7, 21, 28, and Nov. 4 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Goshen Community Center.

Author Stephen King once wrote, “Sooner or later, everything old is new again.” In the case of Tai Chi, ancient Chinese history appears to be making a comeback on the opposite side of the world. The folklore swirling around Tai Chi, some of which involves a dueling snake and crane, might rival a Stephen King novel for compelling reading on an autumnal day. The earliest known references to Tai Chi date from the T’ang Dynasty (618-960 AD), but it was likely introduced to the public in late 19th century China when it was revered as a martial art and means of self-defense.

These days Tai Chi is recognized for its significant health benefits, and can have a profound impact on quality of life for seniors. It is considered a safe form of exercise – even for frail older adults. Slow, controlled movements build muscle strength, improve balance, gently free up stiff joints, and relieve stress. All movements are done in an upright standing position, or may be done seated by those unable to stand.

Due to its adaptability, it is a form of exercise that can be less intimidating than more strenuous forms of activity. It is effective in reducing the risk of falls and can help manage chronic pain, providing a boost to overall well-being.

Even coming together for classes can be beneficial for older adults, especially those who are isolated or experiencing loneliness. Group lessons serve as an opportunity for socialization and build a sense of community support.

All classes are taught by a certified instructor. While VPAS Tai Chi classes are new to Goshen, classes fill up quickly in other VPAS service areas. To learn more and register, contact Maury River Senior Services at (540) 261-7474 or visit vpas.info/ health-and-wellness-programs.
