The Buena Vista School Board voted last week to approve a new policy for the naming of school facilities.
Previously, the policy was that facilities could not be named after an individual until that person had been deceased for at least 10 years. The new policy allows for facilities to be named after living persons, with their consent, and outlines the process by which naming will take place.
The new policy reads: “The Chairman of the School Board shall appoint an ad hoc naming committee consisting of three members to consider naming School Facilities on an individual basis. The Chairman will also appoint one of the members to serve as chairman of the committee. Upon receiving a naming request application to name a School Facility, the naming committee shall review the application for full completion to ensure the School Facility is eligible for naming consideration, and compliance with all application requirements. Applications must be submitted by an established/recognized group or organization, not an individual. If the application is not approved, feedback will be provided to the requestor to enable revision and resubmission. Names of persons actively serving Buena Vista City Public Schools shall not be considered.”
The policy change was prompted by the Parry McCluer Athletic Hall of Fame, representatives of which came before the Board in late summer to inquire if such a change could be made, which would allow them to name the baseball field at Parry Mc-Cluer High School after famed Philadelphia Phillies manager, and Buena Vista native, Charlie Manuel.
Now, the Hall of Fame will be able to apply with a naming request for the field, which will be considered by an appointed naming committee.
