About 50 to 60 timber framers from near and far returned to Buena Vista and Rockbridge County between Thursday and Sunday to build a stage covering for the Town Square in Buena Vista. A similar assemblage of crafts persons came here in April to build a market pavilion for the Town Square. The initial phase of this past week’s project took place at the county residence of Grigg and Cindy Mullin, who directed the work. Local volunteers came together to provide meals for the workers. “The project has gone beyond the creation of a community space,” said Kristen Ramsey, Buena Vista’s director of economic development. “It has been the result of countless volunteers, hard work and a shared community vision that has shaped the heart of downtown. As we move forward, we want the community’s help to name the space that represents our collective effort.” Community members are being asked to submit suggested names for the Town Square. A selection committee of local leaders, stakeholders, and community members will narrow down the submissions to a few finalists that best fit the long-term vision for the city. Once the finalists are announced, the community will have the opportunity to cast their vote by making a donation of any amount, and the name with the highest dollar amount in donations will become the official name.
