Making Book Buddies

Making Book Buddies

The Rockbridge Pieceworkers Quilt Guild has been busy making book buddies (pillows with a pocket containing a new book) for students enrolled in Rockbridge County Head Start programs. The idea began last Christmas when the Guild was discussing its annual service project in celebration of the Christmas holiday. Member Susan Maluski suggested the Guild do something for young children since Christmas can be such a joyous season. She has since spearheaded this project. The goal is to make 70. Past service projects have included quilted placemats for Meals on Wheels, pillowcases for children battling cancer in the hospital at the University of Virginia, and donations to the Rockbridge Area Relief Association. Members currently also make port pillows for patients undergoing chemo, comfort quilts for people experience life challenges, quilts for new Habitat for Humanity home dedications and have made a quilt to raffle to benefit Project Horizon.
