Oct. 7, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: Recent images of Hurricane Helene’s destruction have been shocking – wild rivers sweeping away houses and bridges, muddy floodwater covering everything as far as you can see. Earlier this year, TV news showed similar scenes from broad swaths of Europe and Africa. Experts agree that natural disasters are worsening because of climate change, more rapidly than predicted.
Climate change is just one of many compelling reasons to vote for the Harris-Walz ticket. Trump has called it a hoax, and his actions as president reflected that view. We cannot afford another four years of inaction.
As for our congressman, Ben Cline has repeatedly voted against measures which address important issues, in lock-step with obstructionists. House Republicans have been so unwilling to compromise they can no longer govern. Cline’s most disqualifying stance was siding with Trump after the assault on the Capitol.
Ken Mitchell is an outstanding alternative. An entrepreneur, small farmer, and veteran, he believes in the military’s code of “leave no one behind.” He wants to bring principled leadership and pragmatic problem-solving to Congress, finding common ground on issues like climate change.
