Wildcats On F ive-Match Win Streak
The Rockbridge County High School volleyball team ran its winning streak to five with a 3-1 Valley District home victory Broadway on Thursday.
Mackenzie McCormick and Jada Hamilton both posted double-doubles as the Wildcats (6-6 overall, 5-2 district) defeated the Gobblers 25-10, 25-21, 2125, 25-19. McCormick tallied 12 kills and 16 digs, while Hamilton totaled 11 kills and 18 digs.
Maisen Mckemy notched 33 assists as RC avenged a 3-0 road loss to Broadway (10-5, 4-3) from Sept. 10. In the rematch, Rebekah Allen collected 34 digs for the ’Cats, and Geneva Snyder chipped in eight kills.
RC head coach Gabe Wagner described the result as “another good team win for us,” but he added that the Wildcats haven’t peaked yet. “We still have lots of work to do in regards to our consistency, but it’s nice to see us constantly progressing,” Wagner said.
The ’Cats had another strong match behind the service line, with five different players recording multiple aces. Snyder led the way with four aces, and RC got two apiece from Allen, Hamilton, McCormick and Mckemy.
Hamilton also registered three blocks, while McCormick and Anna Nye each contributed two.
The biggest challenge for the Wildcats last week might have come in the form of schedule adjustments. RC had two other home matches postponed last week: last Monday’s nondistrict game against Fort Defiance was moved to this past Monday, Oct. 7, while the ’Cats will make up a Valley District contest against Turner Ashby – originally slated for Tuesday of last week – this Thursday evening.
“It was an interesting week with two games getting postponed, but we were able to make the most of it and get a good win,” Wagner said of his team’s performance against the Gobblers.
After hosting Fort on Monday and traveling to East Rockingham yesterday, the ’Cats return home for the rescheduled match with TA tomorrow. RC will then visit William Monroe next Tuesday. Junior varsity action starts at 5:30 p.m. on each night.
