The Collierstown United Methodist Church will observe its 184th homecoming celebration on Oct. 12 and 13. Tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 10, at 9 a.m. members are invited to the church for a cleanup day to prepare the building and grounds for the weekend’s festivities. Saturday evening, Oct. 12, at 6, the homecoming celebration will begin with a program of special music provided by the Ladies of Mercy in the church sanctuary. A free-will offering will be taken. A time of fellowship and light refreshments will follow the music program. On Sunday, Oct. 13, the 184th homecoming worship service will begin at 11 a.m. It will be led by guest minister the Rev. Doug Mitchell, who served as minister of the church from 2010 until 2013. A covered-dish luncheon will follow the worship hour.
The Effinger Community churches and the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department will hold a “trunk or treat” event on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Effinger firehouse’s parking lot. This year’s event will be filled with treats, a strolling magician and lots of fun. Church members will be in decorated cars handing out candy to the community’s children. Participating churches include the Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown Presbyterian, Collierstown United Methodist, Mt. Horeb United Methodist, Oxford Presbyterian, Rapps Church and the Union View Advent Christian Church. Make plans for an afternoon of fun!
On Saturday evening, Oct. 26, there will be a spaghetti supper beginning at 5 at the Collierstown United Methodist Church. The meal includes all-you-caneat spaghetti, tossed salad, bread, dessert and assorted beverages. The cost of the meal is by donation.
Preparations are underway at the Collierstown Presbyterian Church for the church’s annual dinner that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Country ham, fried oysters and turkey dinners will be available for dining in or for taking out. All meals include homemade bread, home cooked vegetables, slices of cake and a choice of beverages. There will be a bazaar in the red building on the church grounds that patrons will want to visit. Bazaar favorites include crafts, homemade breads, baked goods, fresh homemade soups and other specialty items. Sales from the bazaar will benefit the Rockbridge Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Helping Hands, a food ministry of Fairfield Presbyterian Church.
Two building and grounds cleanup days for members and friends will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, and on Friday, Nov. 1. Work will begin at 9 a.m. on the church grounds and in the fellowship hall.
