Feed the Birds – It’s a Win-Win-Win!
CAROLINA WRENS and other birds that winter in Rockbridge prefer seed and suet high in protein and fat. Both are offered in the Rockbridge Bird Club’s Seed and Suet Sale, a fundraiser for Boxerwood Nature Center. Orders must be received by Oct. 28. For order information, go to www. boxerwood.org. Boxerwood Seed, Suet Fundraiser Underway

Rockbridge Bird Club’s annual Seed and Suet fundraiser begins this week – just in time to stock up for winter feeding.

The sale is a fundraiser for Boxerwood Nature Center, a local birding hot spot, cosponsored by the club and Rockbridge Farmers Co-op.

Wild bird seed and products come directly from Lizzie Mae’s Birdseed, a familyowned supplier in Ohio that purchases seed from small Midwest farms.

Rockbridge Farmers Co-op will receive the delivery and host a drive-through pick-up in their parking lot on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Ordering information is posted on the Boxerwood webpage as before, but this year buyers will pay the oldfashioned way – with cash or check—when they pick up their orders. The other option is to print the order form and send it with a check to Boxerwood. Either way, order forms must be received online or by mail no later than Oct. 28.

Looking for other ways to help birds survive this winter? Water is just as important as food. A heated bird bath is ideal, but a regular bird bath can be placed in a sunny spot where the water is less likely to freeze. Brush piles and empty nest boxes can also provide birds with shelter from harsh weather and a place to roost during a freeze.
