The members and friends of the Collierstown United Methodist Church came together recently to celebrate Homecoming and 184 years of ministry in the Collierstown community. The festivities began on Saturday evening, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m. with a program of special music provided by the Ladies of Mercy in the church sanctuary followed by fellowship and light refreshments. On Sunday, Oct. 13, the Homecoming worship service was led by the Rev. Doug Mitchell, who was accompanied by his wife, Jeanne. Together they served the church from 2010 until 2013. Also in attendance was former pastor the Rev. Bill Bearden and his wife, Wendy. A covered-dish luncheon and fellowship time were enjoyed by those in attendance after the worship hour.
The Collierstown United Methodist men will hold their monthly men’s breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 9 a.m. at the church. Good food and fellowship will be served to all in attendance.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. the Effinger community churches and the Effinger Volunteer Fire Department invite the community’s children to a “trunk or treat” activity in the Effinger firehouse parking lot. This year’s event will be filled with treats, a strolling magician and lots of fun. Church members will be in decorated cars handing out candy to the community’s children. Participating churches are the Collierstown Baptist, Collierstown Presbyterian, Collierstown United Methodist, Mt. Horeb United Methodist, Oxford Presbyterian, Rapps Church and the Union View Advent Christian Church.
The Collierstown United Methodist Church will have a spaghetti supper beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday evening, October 26. The meal includes all-you-can-eat spaghetti, tossed salad, bread, dessert and assorted beverages. The cost of the meal is by donation. Come and enjoy an evening of good food and fellowship.
Members and friends of the Collierstown Presbyterian Church are preparing for the church’s annual dinner that will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Country ham, fried oysters and turkey dinners will be available for dining in or for taking out. All meals include homemade bread, home-cooked vegetables, slices of cake and a choice of beverages. Take out orders may be placed by calling the church at (540) 463-5918 from noon until 6 p.m. on the day of the dinner. There will be a bazaar in the red building on the church grounds that patrons will want to visit. Bazaar favorites include crafts, homemade breads, baked goods, fresh homemade soups and other specialty items. Sales from the bazaar will benefit the Rockbridge Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Helping Hands, a food ministry of Fairfield Presbyterian Church. Two building and grounds clean up days for members and friends will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, and on Friday, Nov. 1. Work will begin at 9 a.m. on the church grounds and in the fellowship hall. The members of the congregation are looking forward to the opportunity to extend hospitality to the community and surrounding area.
