Oct. 11, 2024 Editor, The News-Gazette: The Biden-Harris administration refers to electric vehicles (EVs) as “pollution free” vehicles, which is both erroneous and deceptive since electric vehicles simply transfer the pollution from the vehicle to the power or charging station.
Most charging stations draw power from the electrical grid where about 80% of the electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels. In some cases, the electrical grid may not support EV charging stations and diesel generators must be installed to power the recharge ports.
In any event, the amount of electricity required for EV regeneration is projected to dramatically increase. For example, the power required to convert the 292 million vehicles operating in the United States to allelectric will require more power than the total residential use in America. So, the conversion to an all-electric fleet will require millions of charging ports and a significant increase in power production.
Other issues that must be resolved are the potential fire problems and the safe disposal of used batteries. So, while electric vehicles have a place in our future, the transition process must be methodical and cautious and must not be based on an arbitrary date. BILLY KORNEGAY Lexington
