Lexington City Council Thursday night approved a conditional use permit to allow portion of the Rockbridge Building, located at 9-17 S. Main St., to be used as office space for Washington and Lee University, as well as a meeting area. The vote was 4-3.
Leslie Straughan made the motion to approve the permit, and Chuck Smith provided the second. They, along with David Sigler, voted in favor, while Marylin Alexander, Charles Aligood and Nicholas Betts voted against. Mayor Frank Friedman cast the deciding vote.
Council also voted on a conditional use permit to continue the use of the old courthouse at 2 S. Main St. as office space for W&L. That permit was approved unanimously.
Details about the discussion of both permits will appear in the Oct. 23 edition of The News-Gazette.
