Ensemble, Vosbein Magee Presenting Night Of Jazz
THE UNIVERSITY Jazz Ensemble will be joining the Vosbein Magee Big Band in concert on Nov. 7.

Get ready for a night of swinging rhythms and soulful melodies as the University Jazz Ensemble and the Vosbein Magee Big Band team up for their annual fall concert on Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. in the Wilson Concert Hall at Washington and Lee University. This traditional pairing of bands is a highlight for the student and professional musicians alike.

Tickets are not required. For more information, visit online at https://my.wlu.edu/ lenfest-center/university-jazz-ensemble-vosbein- magee-big-band. The performance will be streamed online at livestream.com/wlu.

The all-student University Jazz Ensemble will showcase a diverse array of musical styles and textures. Concertgoers can look forward to a selection that spans genres and eras, featuring Mary Lou Williams’s 1936 classic “Walkin’ and Swingin’,” Sade’s 1985 hit “Smooth Operator,” and even an arrangement of an Italian folk song, alongside music from the popular video game Cuphead. The concert will also highlight the talents of the student soloists.

Following intermission, the Vosbein Magee Big Band will take the stage. Highlights of their set will include a lush rendition of “Body and Soul,” featuring tenor saxophonist Joseph Cotton, and a new Vosbein arrangement of “Portrait of Jennie,” spotlighting alto saxophonist Bill Schnepper.

Continuing a cherished tradition, composer Vosbein has created a new work titled “Luna Leaps In,” which will be performed by each of the bands.

The concert will also feature five senior members of the University Jazz Ensemble — Lui Blomberg, Josh Brown, Joshua Caraballo, Thomas Leggett, and Anna Waters — who will each solo alongside the professional band on Vosbein’s composition “Kurt’s Blues.”
