Chandler Paces PM At Virginia XC Showcase

In its final competition before the postseason, the Parry McCluer High School boys cross country team placed 16th of 34 teams at the Virginia XC Showcase on Saturday at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville.

Racing just outside of Richmond, sophomore Kebryl Chandler led the Fighting Blues, placing 15th of 282 runners in the boys’ Showcase race, completing the mostly flat 5-kilometer course in a personal-record (PR) time of 15 minutes, 9.9 seconds. Newtown’s Soheib Dissa won the race in 14:47.6.

PM’s second runner was Logan Wheelock, placing 108th in 16:21. He was followed closely by teammate Josh Cooper (141st, 16:38.2). Both times were PRs. Next in for the Blues was Caleb Cooper (172nd, 16:54.7), followed by Hinckley Lovelace (193rd, 17:05.1). PM’s final two runners were Sebastian George (256th, 18:20.8) and Sam Carpenter (272nd, PR 18:38.9).

The Blues’ team score was 504 points. St. Albans School won with 96 points, Blacksburg (175) placed second, and Calvert Hall College High School (193) finished third. Rounding out the top five were Greer Middle College Charter High School (250) and Gainesville (283).

PM’s lone girl racing was junior Kyra Lee, placing 141st of 256 harriers in the girls’ Elite race in 21:48.9. William Monroe’s Samantha Nitzsche won the race in 17:47.1.

The winning team in the girls’ race was Washington-Liberty (152), while Alexandria City (195) placed second, and Patriot (204) finished third. Completing the top five were Greer Middle College Charter High School (224) and Nation Ford (244).

The Blues will compete in the Pioneer District meet next Wednesday at Eastern Montgomery and then will prepare for the Region 1C meet, which will take place at Blacksburg High School on Wednesday, Nov. 6, with the girls’ race at 4:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ race at 5:15. The top three teams and the top five individuals outside of those teams will advance to the Class 1 state meet, which will take place at Virginia Tech on Saturday, Nov. 16.
