The eighth annual Nasty 9 Trail Run and 4-Mile Challenge welcomed 72 runners and walkers, taking on the hills and single-track trails at Brushy Hills on Sept. 21.
The event, founded and directed by Peter Jetton, raised funds for the Friends of Brushy Hills and the cross country and track and field teams at Rockbridge County High School, Parry McCluer High School and Maury River Middle School.
There were 33 runners in the 9-mile race, which included over 2,000 feet of uphill climbing. The 4-mile race, which had about 500 feet of climbing, welcomed 39 runners.
Dan Baur, 38, won the 9-mile race in 1 hour, 15 minutes and 28.2 seconds. Placing second was Mark Troni, 20, in 1:21:03. David Downing, 35, finished third in 1:21:14.3.
The top female finisher in the nine-mile race was Mary Syrrist, 40, placing seventh overall in 1:30:46.2. Placing second among females was Austin Winslow, 21, finishing 10th overall in 1:39:27.5. The third female finisher was Emily Brooks, 24, coming in 18th overall in 1:50:24.5.
The overall and female winner of the 4-mile race was Sarah Lathrop, 21, finishing in 37:59.7. Placing second overall and first among males was Max Syrrist, 15, in 38:08.3 Dewey Southall, 49, finished second among males and third overall in 42:03.5 Coming in third among males and fourth overall was Jody Rhyne, 54, in 44:27.2.
Placing second among females and sixth overall was Olivia Close, 19, in 44:50.2. Stella Ewald, 19, finished second among females and seventh overall in 44:52.2.
