The members of Artists in Cahoots have been busy this month creating small but substantial artworks for their upcoming show “Elevate your Bookcases with Art.” The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday, Nov. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. The show runs through November.
“Bookcases are emptying as more readers opt for digital books. In fact, Pew Research recently stated that 33% of readers read both digital and print books, and 9% read only digital books,” noted Artists in Cahoots member Evan Atkins. “That leaves a lot of room to create stunning displays of eye-catching artwork on those deserted shelves.” Evan suggests layering, leaning, and stacking sculptural pieces, vases, pottery, and framed art among the books.
The members of Artists in Cahoots have responded by creating intriguing fine art and functional, fine craft pieces to fit the bill. On display will be several pottery vases, hand thrown by Maureen Worth, to hold dried or fresh flowers, and a Jan Jarrard crafted, Grand Canyon inspired, stoneware bookend and planter. A mixed-media cyanotype image with stand by Mariam Todd, a photo of the Northern Lights over Rockbridge from Kelly Nye, and hand-forged figurative sculptures from Lee Sauder are included.
Rounding out the show are paintings by Elizabeth Sauder, Lori McMahon, Tim McMahon, Ed Bordett, Marsha Heatwole and Evan Atkins, a coloredpencil wildlife image from Bill Kluge and Richard Furman’s wooden charcuterie
