New StoryWalk Opens In Raphine

New StoryWalk Opens In Raphine
THE AREA’S newest StoryWalk has been set up at the Marl Creek TRACK Trail at McCormick’s Farm in Raphine.

The Rockbridge area’s second StoryWalk is coming to the Marl Creek TRACK Trail on the McCormick Farm memorial plot at the Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Raphine.

Starting Nov. 1, families will find laminated pages from a children’s book attached to yard signs along the walking path. Children will follow the signs along the trail to read the full story.

The StoryWalks project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vt., and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk is a registered service mark owned by Ferguson. Rebecca Owen, FCS SNAP-Ed Extension agent of Virginia Cooperative Extension, is teaming up with Live Healthy Rockbridge Kids and the Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Research and Extension Center to bring this new StoryWalk to the area.

The first in the area was set up on the Fox Trot TRACK Trail at Glen Maury Park last fall.

The books used for the Story-Walks will be in some way related to food. At the end of each trail, families will find a healthy recipe from the Virginia Family Nutrition Program recipe bank that relates to the featured story. A new story is featured on the trails every month.

The featured book for the month of November on the Marl Creek Trail is “The Best Thanksgiving Ever” written by Teddy Slater and illustrated by Ethan Long. The humorous story follows a family as they prepare for Thanksgiving dinner. The twist – the featured family is made up of turkeys. And what will they have for their annual feast? Why, Thanksgiving corn of course!

In November, there will be a Double Cornbread recipe located in a staked literature holder at the exit of the trail.

The story at the Glen Maury Park trail for November will be “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Turkey” written by Lucille Colandro and illustrated by Jared Lee. The recipe that will be featured is Turkey Skillet Dinner.

To schedule a free food tasting of the featured recipe for a children’s group at the end of the walks, contact Rebecca Owen at (540) 463-4734 or via email at [email protected].
