With October nearly a memory, the volunteer board of Rockbridge Christmas Baskets is hard at work preparing to meet the needs of local households facing food insecurity this holiday season. Most importantly, RCB wants to highlight two dates so our community can help make this year’s efforts a success: Nov. 8 and Dec. 7.
Basket applications, in both English and Spanish, are currently available online on the RCB website (rockbridgechristmasbaskets. org). They may also be picked up and dropped off at any area CornerStone Bank drive-thru window or the Lexington Police Department office during normal business hours. Applicants may also mail completed applications to RCB, P.O. Box 1030, Lexington, VA 24450. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, Nov. 8. (Mailed forms must be postmarked by this date.)
Who should apply? The forms should be used by Rockbridge County, Lexington and Buena Vista residents struggling to put food on the table or provide a new toy for their child to enjoy this Christmas season. Those who received a basket last year who have had no changes to their household or contact information need not apply.
Those in need who have never received a basket or who received a basket last year but now have updates to their household or contact information should submit an application. RCB asks that updates are submitted by the form and not through social media.
This year’s Packing Day event is planned for Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Virginia Horse Center. RCB invites all who wish to spread Christmas cheer in the community to come and help pack the 40 tons of food into 1,900 boxes for delivery by volunteer teams later that day. The event requires no sign-up.
Financial donations help thousands in the community by making Packing Day possible. Donations can be made online at rockbridge-christmas-baskets.square.site or by mail to RCB, P.O. Box 1030, Lexington, VA 24450.
