Virtual Child Care Town Halls Friday

Two virtual town halls on child care needs in the Rockbridge area have been set up for this Friday, Nov. 1, as local governments continue to collect data as a part of a comprehensive Childcare Needs Assessment in our region.

Data from child care providers, seekers and local businesses committed to enhancing childcare capacity is the key to development of a strategic plan for child care, according to the committee spearheading the project. This initiative aims to identify current challenges and opportunities within the child care landscape.

The committee has already hosted several town hall meetings to engage the community. In addition, two virtual town halls have now been scheduled for Friday at 9 and 11 a.m., providing an opportunity for further input and discussion.

Planners OK Rezoning

For Cemetery Parcels

By Joseph Haney

The Lexington Planning Commission last Thursday approved a pair of rezoning requests and conditional use permit applications from the city for land purchased for the expansion of Evergreen and Oak Grove cemeteries.

The city purchased the parcels – two on Houston Street totaling .45 acres and one on Evergreen Place with an area of 1.86 acres – in late 2022 with the goal of using them for expansion of their respective cemeteries.

The parcels were zoned R-1 at the time of purchase, which was the only zoning district in the city which allowed cemeteries at that point.

Earlier this year, Lexington City Council approved a series of amendments to the city’s zoning ordinances, among them removing cemeteries as a use in the R-1 zoning district and making them a conditional use in the city’s Parks and Open Spaces zoning districts.

The applications before the Planning Commission at their meeting last week requested rezoning for the newly purchased parcels from R-1 to Parks and Open Space, and a conditional use permit for the entirety of each cemetery.

Both applications were approved unanimously
