Tuesday, Feb. 21 -- The Parry McCluer High School girls basketball team defeated Galax 48-34 in the quarterfinals of the Region 1C tournament in Buena Vista.
Victoria Hamilton scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Fighting Blues (22-2) into the regional semifinals. PM will take on Fort Chiswell at Pulaski County High School on Friday evening.
Anna Claytor added 12 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks for PM, the top seed from the Pioneer District, and Natalie Mohler chipped in 11 points and six boards. Jayden Leonard scored 11 points to pace the Maroon Tide (14-12), the No. 4 seed from the Mountain Empire, while Carly Sturgill finished with seven points and eight rebounds.
Hamilton scored 13 of her team's 15 points in the first half, as the Blues clung to a narrow 15-13 edge at the break. But PM started the third quarter on an 8-0 run, and the Blues were able to keep Galax at arm's length for the rest of the night.
PM salted the game away at the foul line in the fourth quarter. After shooting just 21-of-37 at the charity stripe in a 55-51 double-overtime win over Eastern Montgomery in the Pioneer District championship game on Friday, the Blues knocked down 19-of-23 attempts against the Maroon Tide -- including 7-of-8 in the final minute of the contest.
Jenna Sawyers added seven points for Galax. Payton Emore tallied five rebounds and four assists for PM.
Tip time for Friday's regional semifinal is slated for 8 p.m.
