SVU Presents ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ Adaptation
Southern Virginia University Theatre will present “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” adapted by Joe Landry, this weekend and next weekend.
Performances will run Nov. 8-9 and Nov. 14-16 at 7:30 p.m. in the SVU Performing Arts Center.
The play is an adaptation of the beloved film, which is based on the short story “The Greatest Gift” by Philip Van Doren Stern. It follows the life of George Bailey, an everyman who feels that his life has been a failure – until an angel named Clarence gives George an unusual chance to see how he’s made a difference for his friends and family in the small community of Bedford Falls. In the end, Clarence earns his wings, and George learns that “no man is a failure who has friends.”
Associate professor Amaree Cluff said, “We chose this play for our season because we loved its message; ultimately it’s a story about community, about miracles, and the power that each of us has to do good.”
The play, which is directed by associate professor David Dwyer, is unique in that the story is presented as a 1940s radio production. As the actors bring the story to life, the audience will also have the delight of seeing live sound effects created by foley artists on set.
Dwyer also serves as technical director and has designed the set and lights; other production staff include senior student Martha Zimmerman as stage manager, and costumes are by Amaree Cluff and Leigh Stoddard.
Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite. com with general admission $11 and senior tickets $9. Concessions will also be available for purchase.
