Area teachers were upset when they were told they had to use a personal day to attend the Virginia Educational Association conference instead of being granted professional leave as they had in the past. -By a surprising margin, Lexington voters approved the sale of mixed alcoholic beverages at restaurants in the city. -A two-county chase involving an Augusta County deputy sheriff and two teenagers from Goshen ended when the car being pursued crashed at Goshen Pass. The driver was operating the vehicle on a suspended license.

The Lexington School Board was mulling over the idea of consolidating Waddell Elementary School and Lylburn Downing Middle School into one facility. - Bea Maurer Inc. prepared to construct a new 45,000-square-foot building behind its manufacturing plant in Fairfield. The company makes deployable shelters mostly used by the military. - The 90-year-old red iron trestle bridge over South River was dismantled. It had been knocked off its footing a year before by Hurricane Isabel.
