A 90th birthday celebration was held at the Natural Bridge Hotel in honor of Ramona (Winky) Dunn. In attendance were family and friends from Lexington, Glasgow, Richmond, Buena Vista and Roanoke.

Gwendolyn Thompson Poole participated in the Alleghany Highland Storytelling Festival held in Clifton Forge on Oct. 25-26. On Friday evening, the four folktales she told focused on wisdom and foolishness. She attended a workshop conducted by one of the Master Tellers. Gwen’s Saturday evening rendering was a delightful story from her childhood experience as a first-grader at Lylburn Downing in the 1950s. She was pleased to see folks from Lexington sitting in the audience in support of their hometown girl. Gwen thoroughly enjoyed the festival as well as the beautiful fall foliage during her time in the Virginia mountains.

On Oct. 27 after worship service, the members of Union Baptist Church in Glasgow hosted their third annual Fall Festival. The fun-filled afternoon consisted of a petting zoo, bouncy house, free food and drinks. There were various vendors from the area as well as trunk or treat for the children. There was a car show that consisted of 25 cars. Tonita Rogers won the best decorated car in the trunk-or-treat contest. Cracker Jenkins was the best overall car show winner. All are welcome to attend Sunday morning services at 11 a.m. at 733 McCulloch St., Glasgow.

On Sunday, Oct. 27, a gathering of over 70 family, friends and neighbors joined to honor and celebrate the 98th birthday of Nadine Hubbard. Ms. Hubbard, a lifelong resident of Natural Bridge, was greeted by five generations of her family and relatives from seven states who traveled to share in this joyous milestone.

Judge Johnny Morrison, chief judge of the Third Circuit Court for the Portsmouth City Circuit Court (a Washington and Lee University graduate) presented Ms. Hubbard with a Certificate of Recognition, issued and signed by Don L. Scott, speaker, Virginia House of Delegates, the first African American to hold this position. The proclamation highlighted Ms. Hubbard’s love of family, commitment to service, dedication to her community, and focus on the essential family values of honesty, kindness, justice and education. A good time was had by all.
