Ruritans, Church Provide Firewood To Local Residents
Members of Bethesda Presbyterian Church and the Brownsburg Ruritan Club gathered the second weekend of October to saw up and split firewood as part of an annual project to provide firewood to local residents. They cut and delivered 12 loads of firewood this year.
“We help clean up people’s fence lines and work up downed trees, so it helps out the property owners, and then we give the wood to people, a lot of them elderly, who need the wood,” said Bryan Tolley, a member of the Ruritan Club.
The project has been going on for at least 30 years. Howard Camden, Peyton Craun and Jerry McDonald originally started the wood-splitting for David Dickerson, who was Bethesda’s minister at that time. Since then Bethesda and the Brownsburg Ruritan Club have continued the tradition and have added others to their list.
Church member Brandan Huffman was in charge of this year’s operation. He cut the trees down during the spring while clearing fence rows on the Tolley farm.
Ruritan members involved this year included Barry Chewning, Lee Oas, Dick Fletcher, Dan Williamson, Matt Delfert, Fred Weeks Jr., Mike Vest and Bryan Tolley.
Church members and others involved included Brandan Huffman, Ken Mohler, Jon McDonald, James McDonald, Jay McDonald, Richard Bsullak, Mike Bell, Benny Plogger, Michael Plogger, Kenny Cox, Wade Fitzgerald and Brian Poindexter.
Susie Mohler, Tabby Mohler and Gail Heslep organized breakfast and lunch at the church.
