A Long View Of Trump’s Victory

Nov. 8, 2014 Editor, The News-Gazette: Trump’s sweeping victory need not just be understood as his personal special delivery of a narrative that lies embedded in the human spirit. The Enlightenment, spanning some 400 years of European history, with its aspiration expressed as, “Don’t tread on me,” is an ethos of comfort shared by many.

Most people don’t want the government in their face ... they want to be left alone to manage their own lives and be able to grasp an opportunity to achieve their own dreams.

Collectivism, the enemy of individualism, has slithered, these past 100 years, onto the fabric of our once free society depositing its dark detritus over the substance of the American dream.

It’s pretty doubtful Americans can get back and hold onto the “city on the hill,” once described by 18th-19th century writers, but the 2024 election will be remembered by many as the rebirth of the will to try. DON HENKE Goshen
