Rockbridge Conservation Seeks Help In PFAS Study

Rockbridge Conservation is inviting community members to participate in an initiative aimed at understanding and addressing the presence of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), commonly known as “forever chemicals.”

Data can help determine their sources and protect the environment and residents’ health, said a spokesperson.

In order to accomplish this, citizens who participated in the Virginia Household Water Quality Program in Rockbridge County are asked to provide testing results for use with this citizen science project.

During the Rockbridge Conservation annual meeting, the Virginia Cooperative Extension, through Virginia Tech that conducted the household water testing, was honored for its important work in this matter.

“Understanding the types and concentrations of PFAS is essential for identifying their sources and assessing risks,” said the spokesperson. “This information helps advocate for necessary changes to safeguard our community’s health and environment.”

Citizens who have recently tested for PFAS in their water, soil or other materials are encouraged to share those results with Rockbridge Conservation.

“Rest assured, Rockbridge Conservation will never identify sources of volunteer data from citizens, including property, address and name,” said the spokesperson. Contributions will remain confidential.

Citizens who are willing to share their results with Rockbridge Conservation or have any questions concerning PFAS are asked to contact the organization at [email protected].
