A disaster preparedness and survival course will be offered Dec. 7 and 8 at the Rockbridge Baths firehouse.
The class is free, funded by a grant from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security.
The “Disaster Preparedness and Survival: A Guide for Individuals, Families, And Communities” course is designed to teach and encourage civilians impacted by a disaster to prepare, take preservation actions, and perform, as appropriate, light search and rescue response to aid their family and other community members in the immediate aftermath of a natural disaster or a human-made incident. In disaster situations civilians may find themselves taking care of themselves, their family, and neighbors for an extended period after an incident occurs before professional emergency responders arrive. This course provides them with the knowledge to “Prepare, Act, Survive.”
The course length equals 12 hours of instruction over the two days, with hands-on application. Course study and hands-on activities including search and light rescue techniques, breaching a wall, and using leverage to lift a roof.
Participants are required to attend at least 80% of the 12 hours.
The course will run from noon to 6 p.m. on Dec. 7 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 8, with a one-hour lunch break.
