The Chamber of Commerce Serving Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County played host to the 2024 People’s Choice Awards on Nov. 6 at the Natural Bridge Historic Hotel and Conference Center. This annual event recognizes exceptional individuals, organizations and businesses that have made a lasting impact in Rockbridge County.
The People’s Choice Awards honor outstanding contributions across five key categories: Volunteer of the Year, Humanitarian of the Year, Educator of the Year, Employer of the Year, and Citizen of the Year. Nominees are submitted by local civic organizations, the Chamber board of directors, and members of the community.
David Dugan was named Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his long-standing commitment to the Rockbridge Area Health Center. A founding board member since 1992 and current treasurer, Dugan has been instrumental in maintaining the organization’s financial health and ensuring its continued success. His dedication to service extends beyond RAHC, with his deep-rooted involvement in the broader Rockbridge community. Dugan is a true embodiment of “service above self,” said a chamber spokesperson.
This year’s Humanitarian of the Year award was presented to Rockbridge Connect And Nourish (CAN) for its work in fostering social connections and nourishing the community. Rockbridge CAN’s innovative program provides free, professionally catered meals, supported by volunteers, in multiple locations across Rockbridge County during the first three weeks of each month. Through this initiative, Rockbridge CAN not only brings people together but also offers free transportation and connects guests with valuable community resources. Their inclusive approach ensures that everyone is welcome.
Heather Moore was named Educator of the Year in recognition of her profound impact on students at Fairfield Elementary School in Rockbridge County. Her dedication to creating an environment where her students thrive is evident in her nurturing approach, which builds confidence and empowers young learners, said a spokesperson. Known for her kindness, patience, and unwavering advocacy for her students, Moore ensures that every child’s voice is heard, and their needs are met.
